Summer Teen Volunteer Program

Applications for our 2010 Summer program will be accepted until April 16, 2010. The Teen Volunteer Program runs from Monday, June 7, 2010 through Friday, July 30, 2010.

Our staff and patients need you. Consider joining the hundreds of teenagers who have volunteered their time and talents each summer at Grady over the years. Your willingness to give will have a positive impact on our patients and their recovery. Grady employees will come to rely on your dedication and your giving spirit.

Are you Grady teen volunteer material?

To volunteer, you must be at least 14 (by Aug. 31) to 17 years of age; have identification including a social security number; provide two personal references; and show documentation of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine and recent TB test results (from within the past 30 days).

Additional qualifications include:

  • Recommendation of school counselor or principal
  • Conduct average of "B" on most recent report card
  • Academic average of "C" on most recent report card
  • Permission of parent or guardian
  • Good health and grooming
  • Availability to work at least 3 hours weekly for 6-8 weeks (assignments available Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Complete a personal interview and hospital orientation
  • Complete the teen volunteer application form or download an application form and return it by noon on Friday, April 16, 2010

What volunteering isn't?
Volunteering is not an internship or a shadow program. It's also not an opportunity to get clinical experience. As a volunteer, you are not allowed to participate in direct patient care. Finally, we do not accept volunteers who are court ordered to perform community service.

Ready to get started?

1. Complete the Volunteer Application
You can apply online or download an application form. You'll need to provide two references. We can't proceed with your application until your references are verified - so you'll need their contact details.

2. Attend a Follow-up Interview.
After you submit your application, we will follow-up with your references. Once your references respond to us by fax or e-mail. You will be contacted for an interview with the Volunteer Services Manager. During the interview, placement in an area of interest to you will be discussed.

3. Attend an Orientation Session
At orientation, you will learn in detail about the requirements for volunteering at Grady and get important information about Fire Safety, Patient Confidentiality, Infection Control, and Police and Security. You'll also be given a tour of the hospital.

All of these procedures are in place to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our patients and their families. Please call the Volunteer Services Department at (404) 616-4360 or e-mail Brooke Eldridge if you have questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the time commitment?
The minimum requirement for volunteering is the availability to perform a three-hour shift per week for the duration of the program.

What health records are required?
Grady requires all volunteers provide documentation of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine and recent TB test results (from within the past 30 days). You can generally find this information on your childhood vaccination records.

If you have not fulfilled these medical requirements, the Volunteer Services Department can schedule an appointment for you with Employee Health at your follow-up interview. There is no charge for an Employee Health appointment.

If you prefer, you may see your own primary care provider. However, it is important to note that costs for MMR vaccinations and TB testing will vary among medical providers and are expensive. Insurance plans often do not cover these tests. These charges will be the responsibility of the new volunteer and not the responsibility of the Volunteer Services Department or the Grady Health System.

Is there a volunteer dress code?
Yes, teen volunteers are required to wear their volunteer polo shirt and badge at all times while working in the health system. Dress code prohibits the wearing of blue jeans, sweatpants, exercise pants, shorts, hats, sunglasses, T-shirts and open-toed shoes.

Will I be able to shadow a physician and or have a clinical experience?
No. We do not offer shadowing or clinical experiences through the volunteer office.

If I volunteer will I get a job at the hospital?
Volunteering at the hospital does not guarantee employment.
